Sombreros - about Sombreros Mexican Cantina Queenstown

Sombreros is Queenstown’s only Mexican restaurant and has been part of the town’s dining scene since 1980. It was originally called Saguaros but the name was a bit tricky to remember so it was changed to Sombreros a few years later. In 1985 the restaurant moved from its original location in The Mall to Beech Tree Arcade.

Ian MacLennan and Drew Harmer are the joint owners of Sombreros. The pair go way back – Ian initially worked for the owners of Saguaros and bought the restaurant from them in 1990 and Drew joined the team as a dishwasher when he was 18. The two immediately hit it off and forged a long-standing friendship which, when Drew returned to Queenstown with his wife Abbey a few years ago, morphed into a great business partnership.

Ian and Drew pride themselves on providing fresh healthy Mexican food to diners from all over the world and making sure they have a ‘fantastico’ time whilst at Sombreros.

Families are well catered for - Drew and Abbey have two children of their own so there’s plenty to occupy small people, from the dedicated kids’ menu to toys and colouring sheets.

Ian and Jen and Drew and Abbey are passionate about Queenstown and are proud to support the following organisations:
Wakatipu Trails Trust
Wakatipu Netball Centre
Wakatipu Rugby Club
Pelicans Cricket Club
Children’s charities
World Vision
Amnesty International
